The comedy "Over the River and Through the Woods" is getting closer and closer.

The comedy about family opens on Friday night, February 24, at 8 p.m. -- Kernersville Elementary School, Fitzpatrick Auditorium (free parking in the lot adjacent to the auditorium).

Additional shows are Saturday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m.; Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, March 2 and 3 at 8 p.m.; and closing show on Sunday, March 4 at 2 p.m.

Now that the 2012-2013 season shows have been firmly set (see below), it's time for our all-volunteer play reading committee to start the process for 2013-2014. The play reading committee reads a wide range of scripts and develops a narrowed field of recommendations for the KLT Board to contemplate.

The first meeting of the new "season" of play reading will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday night, January 30. It will be held in the Kernersville Senior Center, located on the basement level of the Paddison Memorial Library, East Mountain Street, Kernersville. The meeting is open to the public, and especially to people who may be interested in volunteering to read and review play scripts for possible KLT production.

Same school, different room for auditions on December 15th

OK, due to a recently-uncovered scheduling conflict, we need to make an adjustment to the announcement of OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOODS auditions.

On the FIRST night of auditions - Thursday, Dec. 15th - auditions will be held in ROOM 122 at the elementary school rather than the auditorium. Enter as you normally would, through the doors to the lobby of the auditorium (auditorium on your left), but turn right down the hallway to the area of the rest rooms. There will be KLT volunteers there on Thursday night to help you find Room 122. (There's a meeting in the auditorium, so don't go there!)

On the SECOND night -- Friday, Dec. 16 -- sign-ups will be in the auditorium lobby and auditions in the auditorium, as originally announced.

Auditions are Dec. 15 and 16 for "Over the River ..."

Auditions for KLT's upcoming production of OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOODS, a comedy/drama by Joe DiPietro, will be held on Thursday, Dec. 15 and Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at 7 p.m. Location: the auditorium at Kernersville Elementary School, 512 West Mountain Street. The show is directed by Stan Bernstein of Winston-Salem.

About the play: Nick is a single, Italian-American guy from New Jersey. His parents have retired and moved to Florida. That doesn’t mean his family isn’t still in Jersey. In fact, he sees both sets of his grandparents every Sunday for dinner. This is routine until he has to tell them that he’s been offered a dream job that would take him away from his beloved, but annoying, grandparents. The news doesn’t sit so well.

Thus begins a series of schemes to keep Nick around. How could he betray his family’s love to move to Seattle, for a job, wonder his grandparents? Well, Frank, Aida, Nunzio and Emma do their level best, and that includes bringing to dinner the lovely--and single--Caitlin O’Hare as bait.

Roles are: Nick Cristano, in his late 20's to mid 30's; his grandparents: Nunzio Cristano in his 70's and his wife Emma in her 70's, and Frank Gianelli in his 80's and his wife Ida in her 70's. And Caitlin O'Hare, in her 20's to early 30's.

It's opening night! The Doris Baizley adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol" starts tonight at 8 p.m., at Main Street Baptist Church in downtown Kernersville. Kernersville's downtown area hosts a major draw each Halloween -- bring the kids and go from business to business gathering in the loot.

Since KLT's "compact" office is located uptown, in one corner of Harmon Park, KLT volunteers open the office that evening; other volunteers donate candy; and a lot of children take home some Trick or Treat sweets. But they also take home a brochure or two from KLT -- which hopefully helps spread the word of our shows and other projects.

2011 was no exception -- lots of candy, and over 600 brochures, were handed out during the evening. Thanks, volunteers!

A Christmas Carol auditions set for October 8-9

Auditions for the December production of A Christmas Carol (Adam Sullivan, director) have been set for Friday night, October 7 at 7 p.m. and Saturday morning, October 8 at 9 a.m., Main St. Baptist Church, 126 North Main Street, Kernersville. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script and a brief movement exercise. Also, be prepared to sing (a capella) a short excerpt from your favorite hymn or Christmas carol.

This play is a modern adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens tale by Doris Beazley.

May 14 Yard Sale fundraiser - change of location

KLT will hold its annual Yard Sale fundraiser on Saturday, May 14th. The location is slightly different than past years, however, and has changed since we first posted about this year's event.

To bring items to, volunteer for or shop at the KLT Yard Sale, it will be held in 2011 at 403 South Main Street. That location is the empty lot immediately north of Korner's Folly.

If you will not be around on the 14th but have items you would like to donate for the Yard Sale BEFORE the 14th, please call the KLT office at 993-6556 -- and leave a message if no one is in the office. The Yard Sale is an important source of income for KLT each year, and anything not sold is donated to a good cause.

KLT is currently auditioning for its June musical, the popular Mark Twain tale of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," set to music.

At the end of our two days of regular auditions, however, we are still coming up short in some critical categories. So, we've added another night of auditions: Monday, August 18th, starting at 7:30 p.m. Auditions will be held at the usual place: the Fitzpatrick Auditorium of the Kernersville Elementary School, on West Mountain Street. As you face the school, the Auditorium is on the left-hand side. There's a driveway that is NOT the "U"-shaped drive that approaches the front entrance of the school that goes along the side to a parking lot near the Auditorium.

We are especially in need of adult women, adult men and teenaged boys, though anyone who would like to audition and has not yet done so is welcome! Call 993-6556 on Monday or check the KLT web site (www.kltheatre.com) to get more details if you need them. And come on out for auditions.

Audition workshop is this Saturday afternoon (April 9)

April J' Callahan Marshall will lead an Audition Workshop on Saturday, April 9, at the Kernersville Elementary School Auditorium, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The workshop will touch on all subjects with regard to auditioning for a show and how to prepare for it. She will talk specifically about the upcoming auditions for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The workshop is open to anyone who wants to come; there is no age limit.

These workshops are very educational, and we encourage any and all of you to come. We think it will be well worth your time.

Please remember that soft drinks and food are not allowed in the auditorium. If you'd like to bring a water bottle, please feel free to do so. The auditorium will be open at 1:45 p.m. Please arrive early and get a good seat and be ready to begin promptly at 2:00 p.m.

As usual, we welcome any kind of saleable donations. If you'd like to arrange to have them picked up or you would like to drop them by the office, please call 993-6556 (leave a message if necessary) to make arrangements. Or if you plan to get up early on Saturday, May 14 anyway, you can bring your items directly to the Yard Sale at around 7-7:30 a.m. The Sale itself technically runs from about 8 am to noon.

Kernersville Little Theatre has officially lined up its season of four plays for its 2011-2012 season, which will run from September 2011 through June 2012. It will be a little while before all the show dates, audition dates and production plans are in place, but here's what will be offered on the KLT stages after we close the current season with "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: The Musical" in June at Kernersville Elementary School's Fitzpatrick Auditorium:

This fall at Korner's Folly: Triad playwright Scott Icenhower's The Service at Rocky Bluff -- a comic look at a plan gone awry in a small church.

This holiday season at a local church: Doris Baizley's humorous adaptation of Charles Dickens's classic A Christmas Carol, as an acting troupe tells the well-known story in a new way.

The winter show at the elementary school: Joe DiPietro's Over the River and Through the Woods. When a single Italian-American guy, who sees both sets of grandparents every Sunday, announces he's been offered a job in Seattle .....

The June musical at the elementary school: Kilroy Was Here, book by Tim Kelly and music by Bill Francoeur, is coming to town. It's a comedy, it's a musical, it's a tribute to fighting forces of World War II, all rolled up in one.

And don't forget, auditions for our final 2010-2011 season show -- the Broadway musical version of Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" -- are coming soon. Friday night, April 15 (7 p.m.) and Saturday morning, April 16 (9 a.m.) are the appointed dates. Those wishing to audition can attend either session! The director is seeking actors, singers and dancers from age 12 and up.

For young people, and for older people -- but especially for young people! -- the next significant scheduled event for Kernersville Little Theatre* will be auditions for our June production of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: The Musical."

If you are at all familiar with Mark Twain's classic story of growing up in a small Missouri river town, you know that there are a fair number of young people involved -- including Tom himself, Becky Thatcher and Huck Finn. And of course, there are the adults involved who try to influence the young people one way or another.

Auditions will be held on two days: Friday, April 15th, starting at 7 p.m. in the evening, and Saturday, April 16th, starting at 9 a.m. in the morning. The venue will be the Fitzpatrick Auditorium at Kernersville Elementary School (on the west side of the building, or the left-hand side if you're looking from the street). The auditorium area has its own driveway entrance and parking lot, just to the left of the large "U" driveway that accesses the front entrance of the school. (It's also where we hold our February show, just completed.)

The director is seeking actors aged 12 and up. Auditioners will be asked to read from the script; and most will be asked to sing a song or portion of a song as well as be shown and asked to repeat some basic dance steps. There may be some non-singing roles. If you are going to sing, be prepared to sing a basic song chosen by the director and accompanist, OR bring your own sheet music for a song of your choice to give to the accompanist.

Actors will be expected to attend most if not all of the rehearsals (depending on part and schedule) from April 18 through the opening of the show (weeknights mostly). The show itself has a preview on June 16th and shows June 17-19 and June 23-26, closing with a 2 p.m. matinee and strike following.

Congratulations to everyone involved in the just-completed production of "Headin' for the Hills." Attendance well exceeded earlier budget predictions, which is very good news indeed in tight budget years! And the show was very much the kind of family-friendly, kid-friendly, have a good laugh kind of show KLT likes to present, for so many reasons. It very well fits our mission statement, giving young people a chance to experience a stage production, our more experienced actors an opportunity for some fun, and our audience a chance to sit back and enjoy.

Kernersville Little Theatre continues auditions tonight, Friday, December 17 at 7 p.m., for HEADIN’ FOR THE HILLS at Kernersville Elementary School. This is a big cast show with lots of interesting roles. We need kids, 12 years old, wonderful teen roles, great roles up to seniors.

If you would like to get on stage for a small or larger role, this is the show.

HEADIN’ FOR THE HILLS is a comedy set in the hills of Tennessee, setting two young city women against the natives of a small town they are required to visit each summer - or lose their inheritance.

We've completed the second weekend of the run of "The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon," and the laughter continues. This amusing romp through the 209 stories gathered by the German brothers continues to entertain on the Cupid's Park Theater stage at Korner's Folly.

There are four more chances to catch the show: Thursday, Friday and Saturday (September 30-October 2) at 8:00 p.m., and a final matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 3. With intermission, the show runs about 2.5 hours. Rehearsals are well underway for "Brothers Grimm"

We announced the intrepid cast and director earlier for the upcoming "The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon," but we want you to know that they have been hard at work creating a chuckle-fest, first at their temporary rehearsal space and, since August 11th, on the 1896 stage in Cupid's Park Theater, Korner's Folly.

The Spectaculathon, in case you don't already know, consists of a number of inter-related skits that investigate the lesser-known and touch on the better-known folk and fairy tales collected by the Grimm brothers back in the 1800s. Though some of the subjects, like those old tales themselves, are serious or dark in nature (little children being fattened by witches, for instance), the play takes a light, humorous tone throughout most of the play. There's plenty to laugh at as our troupe of performers take on the tales.

KLT gathered a crowd of its active volunteers on Saturday night, August 7 in the Fellowship Hall at Kernersville Moravian Church to present a wide range of awards for its past season. The annual event is held in part to recognize the contributions made by thousands of hours of volunteer participation, in addition to conducting required business of the non-profit theatrical organization.

During the awards segment of the evening, based on the votes of KLT’s active members and season ticket holders, it was announced that the Best Show for the season was "Don't Cry for Me, Margaret Mitchell." KLT had the North Carolina premiere of the comedy last September at Korner’s Folly.

“Mitchell” was also recognized for Best Leading Actor (Jordan Googe), Best Supporting Actor (Dick Strohmeier) and Best Character Actress (Judith Gillis).

Googe also won the Best Major Actor award for his role in “The Battle of Shallowford.” The show also received the Best Lighting Design honors for Jeff Hedgecock and Best Set Design/Dressing for Ray Ruttle, Jr. and Cathy Marion.

KLT’s annual musical, which was “Once Upon A Mattress” in June, took the remaining acting awards, with Best Leading Actress (Kelly Flick), Best Major Actress (Maggie Gallagher), Best Supporting Actress (Ally Austin) and Best Character Actor (Scott Icenhower). The show also won Best Sound Design (Fred Krieg) and Best Costume Design (Marion Seaman).

Other special technical awards included the Doug Weeks Techie of the Year Award, presented to Fred Krieg, and the Pete Reynolds Golden Hammer Award went to Ken Colditz.

In other volunteer categories, the Star Award for over 400 volunteer hours each went to Ashley Collins and Brittany Marshall, who also took home the Above & Beyond Award.

The Outstanding Box Office Volunteer Award went to Lezah Arney. The Team Player Spirit Award was presented to Jan Burwick and Pat Worthington. The Best Teen Award went to Michael Ward. And the Family Affair Award was given to the Knudsen Family (Ryan, Austin, Jordan and Nathan); the Waller Family (Charlie, Alyson and Kirstyn); and the Walek Family (Rene and Mark).

Outstanding Volunteers for over 100 volunteer hours included (working on all four shows): Jan Burwick, Ashley Collins, Brittany Marshall, Fred Krieg, Jim Lehman, and Pat Worthington. Other outstanding volunteers included: Bill Cissna, Elaine Bageris Clark, Vivian Doyon, Jeff Hedgecock and Bob Spontak. Sherri Thornton received four-star volunteer recognition.

Blue Ribbon Volunteers (50-99 hours) were: Katie Boyles, Ken Colditz, Jessica Holcombe, Colleen Kelly, Bill Murphy, Marion Seaman, Nathan Spencer and Mary Jo Wakefield. Caught in the Act Volunteers (25-49 hours) were: Lezah Arney, Chad Brown, Brad Burwick, Clarke Crews, Judith Gillis, Cindy Halstead, Cathy Reynolds, John Saunders, Adam Sullivan and Lisa Wolf.

And the winners of New Kid on the Block certificates included: Seth Barrick, Cindy Halstead and Colleen Kelly.

A "Grimm" cast is set!

Following up on auditions last week at Korner's Folly (where "The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon" will also be performed for three weekends starting in mid-September), a cast has been announced for the show.

The "Grimm" cast -- for a show that may be Grimm but is certainly not grim -- includes, in alphabetical order: Joyce Allen, Brittany Blalock, Zac Hiatt, Tucker Lockhart, Meghan McClanahan, Cary Newberry and Don Thornton. Adam Sullivan, who also directed last year's popular Folly show, "Don't Cry for Me, Margaret Mitchell," is directing "Grimm."

Since the show is a fast-paced revue of the over 200 fairy and folk tales collected by the Brothers, the performers will be performing a variety of characters, which is why we have not applied any particular character name to each actor -- at least, not yet!

KLT will present its first show of the new season in September and October at Korner's Folly.

"The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon" is a generally light-hearted review of the well-known and obscure tales of those traveling brothers. The show will be directed by Adam Sullivan, who also helmed the popular "Don't Cry for Me, Margaret Mitchell" last fall at the Folly. If you are familiar with shows such as "The Compleat Works of W. Shakespeare (Abridged)," you'll know what to expect with "Brothers Grimm."

Auditions for the production will be held on Tuesday, July 13 and Wednesday, July 14, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The director is seeking men and women ages 16 and up. Auditions, later rehearsals and all shows will be in Cupid's Park Theater, on the top level of Korner's Folly, 413 South Main St., Kernersville.

Come on out and take a shot at being a storyteller on the Folly stage with this fast-moving, wide-ranging, fun script.

KLT has announced proposed nominees for its 2010-11 Board of Directors. New and returning directors are elected each year by the theater group’s members at its annual meeting, which will be held this year on August 7.

The proposed board members are: Trish Forbes, whose term will expire in August 2011; Jim Lehman, whose term will expire in August 2012; and Kathy Cissna, Cathy Marion, Robin Raines, Don Scarborough, Adam Sullivan and Mike Whicker, whose terms expire in August 2013.

Current board members who will continue into next season are Ann Krieg, Carol Masters, Myla O’Brien, Ray Ruttle, Jr., Sharon Smith, David Fitzpatrick, Beverly Fry, Lee Hope, Joyce Spontak and Don Thornton.

Also being voted on are the proposed executive board for the coming season. The officers include Kathy Cissna as President, Beverly Fry as VP Administration, Cathy Marion as VP Production, Ann Krieg as VP Volunteer Relations, Sharon Smith as Secretary, Don Thornton as Treasurer and Joyce Spontak as Assistant Treasurer. The positions of VP Marketing and VP Development are open for nominations. (Nominations can be e-mailed to kltheatre@embarqmail.com.)

Everyone is invited to the covered dish banquet at 5:30 p.m., August 7, at the Kernersville Moravian Fellowship Hall, followed by the annual business meeting at 6:30 and the awards ceremony at 7:00. The awards are the highlight of the season for those actors and technical personnel who have labored so hard to bring quality theatre to the area.

Kernersville Little Theatre opened its June musical this past weekend with the amusing and colorful "Once Upon A Mattress." Kernersville Little Theatre has had an Internet presence (at www.kltheatre.com) for some years now -- a fine site built and maintained for some time by KLT actor and treasurer Don Thornton. But in the constantly changing world of the Internet, even the best web site needs a brush-up and a new look every now and then. And we're no different.

So over the past weekend, after lots of studying of other theatre web sites around the country and thinking about what casual visitors to a web site most want to know, we completed the construction of a new web site for OUR community theatre -- and put it in place.

While there is still a little work to be done (such as replacing a temporary logo in the page headers with a permanent one and adding a little more detail to some of the new show pages in the next season), the new web site is chiefly there. We hope you like it and we promise to keep dressing it up as time goes forward. Enjoy!

Kernersville Little Theatre's annual Yard Sale is coming very soon -- Saturday, April 24th, at the corner of South Main Street and Harmon Lane (across the street from the KLT office building.

Of course, we welcome shoppers, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

We also welcome donations -- if you'd like to bring them by early, call the KLT office at 993-6556 to make arrangements. Or just bring them along between 7 and 8 a.m. on Saturday the 24th! Any donations help greatly. This fundraiser provides much needed extra cash for the Theatre each year.

"Mattress" auditions are April 8 and 9

KLT will hold auditions for "Once Upon A Mattress" on Thursday, April 8 and Friday, April 9 at 7 p.m. in Fitzpatrick Auditorium (which is located at Kernersville Elementary School, 512 West Mountain Street, Kernersville). The auditorium is accessed by the road to the west side of the school itself (rather than the "U"-shaped road that accesses the front of the school.)

Roles are available for teens and up.

Performances are June 17 - June 27th, also in Fitzpatrick Auditorium. Rehearsals are held weeknights, with flexibility depending on role requirements.

Roles are available for 4 women, 6 men, plus a large ensemble/ chorus.

KLT's auditions are open to everyone in the community, regardless of experience. Volunteers will be asked to sing (bring your own sheet music and song if you wish), read from the script, and learn a simple dance combination.

This weekend offers three more chances to catch the fun, warm show, "The Battle of Shallowford," at Kernersville Elementary School's Fitzpatrick Auditorium. The show starts at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights (March 5 and 6), and the final show is at 2 p.m. on Sunday (March 7). There are lots of comic moments in this story of a small town in central North Carolina and the regulars at the local general store who react in various ways when they hear on the radio that the U.S. is being invaded by Martians.

This very funny show about how a group of citizens in a small, rural North Carolina town reacts to the historic (and controversial) 1930s radio production of "War of the Worlds" was written by North Carolina playwright Ed Simpson and has been very well received in prior productions. This Saturday, January 16, 2010, is our first work day for The Battle of Shallowford and we need lots of help.

We're going to load in platforms on Saturday morning at 9:00. Meet at Kernersville Elementary School, in the parking lot alongside the auditorium, or go on to American if you know where that is. Please remember to bring your socket sets and wrenches.

We've got a full day ahead of us, so be prompt. We will also go to the Red Bldg. and get what materials we need from there when we finish the platforms, so please plan to work into the afternoon if need be. We will provide lunch if we need to; we'll play that by ear. We will begin constructing the set this Sunday at 2:00 p.m. and will probably only work until 5 or so. We'll have to be diligent in our work since we missed the first weekend due to the cold weather.

Musical Theatre Master Class at Greensboro Day

This Saturday (Jan. 9) at 12:15, Greensboro Country Day School will have a Broadway musical director giving a master class in their theatre. Michael Rafter has directed many musicals on Broadway, including The Sound of Music, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The King and I, and Gypsy. He is currently in charge of all of the productions of Jersey Boys. He will be giving a lecture about how to succeed in the musical theatre business as a young performer.

At the end of the presentation, he will audition students for his summer camp called Destination Broadway. At this camp, you are trained for one week in dance, voice, and acting by Broadway professionals. If you are planning to audition for the camp, please prepare a short musical theatre audition song.

As we prepare to open our 2009 Christmas holiday show ("The Littlest Angel") at Main Street Baptist Church on December 4th, we have also just received our final approval for the four shows we plan to produce at KLT during the 2010-2011 season, starting in September 2010.

Holiday show: "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever."
February 2011: "Headin' for the Hills."
June 2011: "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer." (a musical, based on the classic Mark Twain novel)

Share your spirit when you attend "The Littlest Angel"

This year, when people attend KLT's annual Christmas production and see "The Littlest Angel," we're asking the audience to do just a little more.

We have teamed up with Main Street Baptist Church (where the play will be presented) to conduct a "Soap and Hygiene Products Drive" on behalf of our local Crisis Control Ministry. In these difficult times, the Ministry is in dire need of "hygiene products," which include: baby diapers, ladies' hygiene products, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soaps and shampoos.

We simply ask that you bring along a donation of this type of product and drop it off when you attend the show. We'll do the rest to make sure that needs are met right here in our own community.

The shows are December 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12 at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, December 13 at 3:00 p.m. Every little bit helps!

KLT is offering the “Holiday Mini-Pass,” an abbreviated version of our season Flex Pass, between now and Christmas.

For just $20 for adults or $16 for students and seniors, the gift recipient receives two ticket passes good to use in any combination at the February comedy (“The Battle of Shallowford”) or the June musical (“Once Upon A Mattress”), both of which will be performed at Kernersville Elementary School.

Recipients can use those two passes however they wish for those two shows. Use both of them for either show. Or use one at a time and see both shows.

It is that time again when KLT decorates the Christmas trees at the Target store here in Kernersville (South Main Street, behind Blockbuster).

This year we will meet on Thursday, November 5th @ 9 A.M. to decorate the trees. There will be 4-5 trees; Target supplies everything including a snack; and it is a lot of fun. So, if at all possible, please plan on coming out and helping us this year.

Remember also that Target, in addition to being a major KLT financial supporter during the year, donates these trees to us to give to the needy in the community -- so please plan on helping.

Now that "Margaret Mitchell" is a wrap, it's not long at all until the Christmas production begins -- in fact, it's this Thursday and Friday evenings (October 8 and 9) at 7 p.m. that director Joy Smallwood will audition actors for this sweet holiday show. KLT is looking for actors from age 8 and up, and will hold the auditions in the sanctuary at Main Street Baptist Church on North Main Street (just north of the Mountain Street intersection on the right-hand side. Parking is available behind the church, and some slots on Main Street itself.)

If you're interested in performing in the show, you may attend either evening, and be prepared to read from the script (copies of the appropriate script text will be made available at the audition). You should also be prepared to sing a song of your choice -- please bring your music; an accompanist will be provided.

The show will be performed in early December, and you will be asked for any possible conflicts you might have with the rehearsal schedule. Performance dates are outlined on the KLT web site (http://www.kltheatre.com/). Also: monologues and some other items you may be asked to read from the script are available on the web site -- just click on "Christmas Show Notes."

KLT kicked off the 2009-2010 season with an unqualified success called "Don't Cry for Me, Margaret Mitchell." Thanks to our director, cast and a host of volunteers behind the scenes, the Folly rocked with laughter through the ten originally-scheduled shows, a busy preview and one add-on show that also allowed one of the playwrights to attend, just adding to the joys of this funny, funny show. We had our best-attended Folly show in some years, which of course helps our budget and the Folly's as well. And we may have set a new record for most seats crammed in for the two final shows.

Thanks again to all the volunteers AND the audiences for being part of "Margaret Mitchell." Sure, there was some hard work, but there was a lot of fun for all involved, too. And isn't that what community theater is all about?

If you haven't already made your reservations, as of this moment (Tuesday morning, 9/29/09 at 10 a.m.), you actually have three chances left -- since the Friday and Saturday night shows are also sold out.

Call 993-6556 right away, and place a reservation for: Wednesday, September 30th or Thursday, October 1st at 8:00 p.m., or Sunday, October 4th at 4:00 p.m. Keep in mind there are a number of stairs to be climbed to reach the Folly theater -- but if you're in the mood for a few chortles and chuckles, this show is the one!

Sorry, we had some mis-information earlier. The Sunday, October 4 show of "Don't Cry for Me, Margaret Mitchell" is NOT sold out at this moment -- a fair number of seats remain for that 4 p.m. presentation.

On the other hand, we ARE currently sold out for Friday night, September 25th and Friday night, October 2nd -- though you can always ask about being added to the waiting list if that is your only chance to see this knee-slapping comedy.

Tickets are also available for Saturday, September 26th, Sunday, September 27th, Thursday, October 1st, and Saturday, October 3rd. Right now, anyway. We highly recommend calling 993-6556 for reservations. And depending on how those reservations go, we MIGHT be adding one more show. Details will come on that added show IF demand calls for it.

KERNERSVILLE - When Marshall had the opportunity to be the production manager for the North Carolina premiere of Don't Cry for Me, Margaret Mitchell, she brought excitement and an intimate working knowledge of Gone with the Wind,also a classic American film that won 10 Academy Awards.

The play will be performed by the Kernersville Little Theatre starting Friday and running through Oct. 4 at Korner's Folly.

Don't Cry for Me, Margaret Mitchell was written by a mother and son team from Charlotte, Virginia Cate and Duke Ernsberger, who also have local ties. Ernsberger attended UNC School of the Arts.

Myla O'Brien, the theater's vice president of marketing, said that the play "is a very funny speculative look at what happened during the seven days when Hollywood giants producer David O. Selznick, director Victor Fleming and script doctor Ben Hecht locked themselves in Selznick's office to rewrite the screenplay for Gone with the Wind. Only Miss Peabody, Selznick's faithful secretary, has access to the men during their sequester."

The film rewrite was necessitated by artistic differences on the 1939 set. Hecht, known as the "Shakespeare of Hollywood," was brought in to rescue the movie.

"For seven days, Fleming, Selznick and Hecht holed up with coffee, peanuts and bananas to make their weekly deadline," said Marshall, who has been a volunteer at the theater since 1979. "This is a very funny play about what they went through to rewrite the script."

Peanuts and bananas were thought to be brain food, and the men felt that eating them would help them write faster and better. Marshall explained that there have been similar plays about the rewrite, but the theater chose this version for its comedic approach and for the opportunity to be the first North Carolina theatrical group to perform it. The play has been performed two previous times.

Director Nathan Adam Sullivan, a freelance director who moved to Kernersville from Arkansas last year, is directing his first production for the theater. He said that performing the play in Korner's Folly will add a step-back-in-time feeling.

"It has a vintage air to it, and is an interesting space. While it does have some challenges, it's awe-inspiring. The history of the Folly is really amazing," Sullivan said.

On opening night, a silent auction of Gone with the Wind memorabilia will be held, Marshall said. She and other members of various Gone with the Wind fan clubs have provided special items for the auction.

After a nearly-full house of invited preview guests watched "Don't Cry for Me, Margaret Mitchell" last night (Thursday the 17th), we got a lot of help knowing where the laughs are -- and that there are a LOT of them.

The show opens tonight at the Folly to a sold-out house, and this Sunday is also sold out. If you want to see it, get those reservations in early! As of the moment, there are still seats for this Saturday night (the 19th) and some in the following weekends.

Thanks to lots of great volunteers and everyone making a contribution, yesterday (Saturday) at the Folly went quite well. Set, set pieces, lighting and sound items all made their way up those wonderful winding stairs to historic Cupid's Park Theater atop the Folly. While there is certainly some work left to do, we can already see a fine-looking set and are well down the pike towards having working sound and lights, too!

For those of you who were able to attend yesterday (giving up a chunk of the long Labor Day weekend on behalf of KLT), our sincerest thanks! We quite literally could NOT have done it without you.

Our Condolences

Karen Bolin passed away Monday, August 31st. KLT expresses our condolences to her family and friends. Below is an e-mail from Susan Pepper with more information about the arrangements.

There will be a memorial service to celebrate the life of Karen Bolin on Friday, September 4th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at The Gardens at Bradford Village, 586 Piney Grove Rd, Kernersville, NC. Friends are invited to say a few words if they would like.

Karen told me and her daughter, Terri, that she would rather be remembered with a “good old-fashioned Irish wake” than a more somber funeral service. So, in that spirit, since karaoke was one of her favorite things, we will set up a karaoke machine will be available and everyone is invited to join in.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Karen’s children, Teresa or Ricky Nowlin, or to the Autism Society, Kernersville Little Theatre or Stained Glass Playhouse would be appreciated.

Believe it or not, it's time for load-in in preparation for our N.C. Premiere of "Don't Cry for Me, Margaret Mitchell"! This coming Saturday, September 5th, starting at 9 a.m. at the Folly parking lot, there will be set, sound and light equipment and materials to be gathered and loaded from the lower level to the top floor -- always an entertainment! At least for the first hour or two, we can use lots of help to make the labor seem light. Some items will be available right at the beginning, and other materials will be collected and brought to the site for carrying (or lifting) to Cupid's Park.

If you have a couple of hours, or more, to spare, please join us Saturday morning at the Folly! (That's September 5th, to be repetitive.) If you have questions or need to know where the Folly is, call the office at 993-6556. We'd love to have you!

Seeking a few good props

The opening of KLT's first show of the new season, "Don't Cry for Me, Margaret Mitchell" at the Folly, is creeping up on us (September 18th, in case you don't already know).

And that means ... it's time to find some props!

If you happen to have a rolling tea cart with one or two shelves, four wheels and a handle to push it, we could use a loan. Also, an old coffee pot (as might have been find in a high-end home or office in 1938-1939) is needed.

As you might have sensed, KLT is pretty excited about its upcoming show, "Don't Cry for Me, Margaret Mitchell." Not just because it's laugh-out-loud funny at a time we can all use a good laugh -- but also because we're offering the North Carolina premiere of a play created by a mother-and-son team of writers (Virginia Cate and Duke Ernsberger -- Charlotte residents, and Duke is a UNCSA alumnus, too!) Though it has appeared at Barter Theatre and a couple of other Virginia venues, we're the first to put the show in front of North Carolina audiences.

We think everyone who can make it to the Folly in late September and early October is going to have a great time. Rehearsals started last week!

A goodly crowd of the Kernersville Little Theatre "family" gathered on Saturday night (August 8th) for a potluck dinner and desserts, a lot of chatting, a little bit of business and a fun awards event. KLT's CORE (Community OutReach Entertainers) visited Providence Place at Westchester Village last night and performed the "KVegas Follies" radio play. We had 30 residents attending, and all seemed to enjoy the show. They surprised us with refreshments at the show, and it was nice to be able to mingle with the audience, bask in their compliments and savor the green punch & cookies. They even had a donation for KLT as a thank you for coming -- another nice surprise.

Chick-fil-A Kids Night

Thanks to Cathy Reynolds for helping out tonight at the last minute. I really appreciate it. The pinwheel craft seemed to go over well with the kids, and it was nice to find a craft that didn't require glue, tons of sticker peelings, or sophisticated artistic ability.

It was a slightly smaller group than usual, but were thrilled to hear that one of our Chick-fil-A Kids' Night regulars attended You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown with her family, and really enjoyed it. Her father echo'd the sentiment. The young ladies favorite character was Snoopy and her favorite part was Charlie Brown at the end.

Join us in August! We'd love the help. And we're always looking for fun, easy (and easy to clean!) crafts!

Kernersville Little Theatre Nominates Officers and Board Members for 2009-2010
(Date) --- July 7, 2009

Kernersville Little Theatre (KLT), a non-profit, volunteer driving organization dedicated to furthering the presence of live theatre in the Triad, has announced its proposed slate of Board of Directors as well as Executive Board members. The theatre group will vote on the slate at its annual meeting, held at the Kernersville Moravian Church on August 8th, 2009.

Board members nominated for new terms include Beverly Fry, Lee Hope, Don Thornton, Joyce Spontak, Amanda Seibert, and David Fitzpatrick to 3-year terms expiring 2012. Don Scarborough has been nominated for a 1-year term to expire 2010. Ann Krieg has been nominated to a vacant term, which expires in 2011.

The proposed Executive Board consists of Kathy Cissna (President), Beverly Fry (VP Administration), Cathy Marion (VP Production), April J’C Marshall (VP Development), Myla O’Brien (VP Marketing), Ann Krieg (VP Volunteer Relations), Sharon Smith (Secretary), Don Thornton (Treasurer).

KLT has recently announced its 2009-2010 season, which begins with the NC Premiere of the fast-paced comedy “Don’t Cry for Me, Margaret Mitchell” which enjoyed successful runs at Abington’s Barter Theatre, and will be performed locally at Korner’s Folly.

The KLT’s Christmas Show, with proceeds benefiting the Christmas Stocking Fund, will be “The Littlest Angel.” The familiar tale brings the warmth of the season to stage.

In February, the show will present local author Ed Simpson’s “The Battle of Shallowford.” Set in the fictional town of Shallowford, (based on Lewisville, NC), the play ponders how the residents reacted to the original “War of the World” radio broadcast.

Thanks to the outreach volunteers who performed at Kerner Ridge Assisted Living last night. Erin Eley, Cindy Shelton, Kay Shelton, Robin Raines, Calvin Raines, Kenny Gaylord, and Amanda Seibert.

Due to a transformer short, there was no air conditioning in the performance room, but the audience was still very appreciative of your talents and time. Thanks for taking KLT out to the community!
